Frequently Asked Questions

Most asked questions about Saint Louis Drum Lessons

Do I need a drum set? No. A drum set is the instrument, but the real skill is the body mechanics behind it such as Coordintion Stick control Timing and Movements. Those mechanics can be taught and later applied to the drum set at lessons.

I'm so uncoordinated. I'll never be able to play the drums. Coordination can be learned.  With correct instruction and repetition, most will excel in coordination.

Am I too old for this? No. You're never too old to learn something new. I've taught students in their 60s & 70s that have had fun because they finally said yes to drumming.

What if I have no rhythm or coordination? Rhythm and coordination can be taught and I teach these skills in a fun, easy way.

Do you have many female / older students? Yes. I have several female students as well as older students; the oldest being 71 years old and the youngest student being 10 years old.

Can I learn just for fun? Yes. Every student has different goals and each lesson is based on those goals. Learn for school band class? Learn for playing with friends? Learn for fun? It all depends on what you want out of your drum lessons.

Will this be stressful? No. You play the drums, you don't work them. Drumming can be cathartic and mindful. It all depends on how you want your drum lessons to be like.

I don't want to waste time learning to read drum music. Understood. Learning to read music is not required to learn the art of drumming. Some students prefer to focus solely on playing rather than reading. However, many of these students indeed discover the value of reading music through their own development. They then agree to spend a few minutes each lesson on basic reading, then the bulk of their time focusing on drumming techniques, motions and playing.

Can you work with me on learning my favorite songs? Yes. We will dive in immediately & begin to relate & understand the drum parts of your favorite songs.

Can I play casually without becoming 'serious'? Yes. The fun part is discovering the art of drumming whatever your goal is. Learning so you can play seriously with other people or just casually for yourself: You decide how your drum lessons will be and feel like.
